November 15th 2009 09:47
Ergo Proxy is an anime directed by Shukou Murase who is also known as the character designer for Final Fantasy IX.
Genres: adventure, drama, horror, mystery, psychological, science fiction, supernatural
Themes: cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic
Age rating: Teenagers (May contain bloody violence, bad language, nudity)
Synopsis: In a future where the world has been ravaged by a nuclear apocalyse, there exists salvation in a domed city named "Romdeau", where humans and their android servants, the autoreivs, live in. Under the implementation of complete management control, it is a paradise where feelings are literally discarded, and the governing council dictates the way of life the citizens should live. But this utopian landscape is soon broken by a series of mystifying murders. Real Mayar, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Bureau, along with her autoreiv partner Iggy, are tasked to solve the murder cases. She is soon attacked by a creature drawn to her which is neither human nor android, and learns about the mysterious phenomena called "Awakening", an event which draws her further into the case...and to the world beyond the limits of Romdeau.

I rarely watched sci-fi anime and Ergo Proxy is the one and only sci-fi anime I've ever watched because Real looks so cool. Let me be honest with you that I'm not really that into sci-fi anime so please forgive me if my review sounds like an amateur.
When the storyline is concerned, I can only say that the storyline is indeed very deep so you may feel like the story can be very dry and suffocating. I supposed this is what the sci-fi genre is all about - the storyline can be very dead serious, the atmosphere is very gloomy and of course full of mysteries that keep on appearing more as the story progressed. Despite of this, I find that the storyline is unique in its own way.
This anime has a lot of life lessons that we can learn upon such as everybody is deserved to lead a good quality life. From what the anime is portrayed, those who live outside of the dome are not meant to live inside the dorm as somehow they were accused as low level creatures. Due to this, they don’t even allow to go in, forget about living there. I won’t say anything much about the life lessons in this anime, but I can say that this anime really does deliver deep messages to those who are watching.
Despite of having deep and heavy storyline, sometimes this anime takes a different route by including what would I call ‘laidback episode’ where they are taking part in a quiz show. Yeah, that’s absolutely hilarious and out of place but this is for the best because the storyline is getting intense as it progressed.
I would say that I really love the character designs for this anime. Among all of the autoreivs who don't even resemble humans, Pino is the one and only autoreivs who does resemble human. Even if Pino is not an autoreivs, she can still be considered as an android right? Character design for Real is typical for any sci-fi anime but then again, the reason why I want to watch this anime in the first place is because of her.
Overall, this anime may just be the typical sci-fi anime like Ghost In The Shell but it still have its own unique way that would make this anime feels like not-another-sci-fi-anime feeling. The storyline is very deep, full of mysteries which I doubt many people would enjoy watching this kind of anime. The visual is cool but if you hate sci-fi anime because of its complicated storyline, I highly suggest that you avoid this anime at all cost. For those who love sci-fi anime, Ghost In The Shell fans and those who are looking for short term sci-fi anime (Ghost In The Shell is a very long sequence anime) or who just simply looking for extra-ordinary looking anime, this anime is for you.
Credits to The Halo Farm for the screencaps.
