Eyeshield 21 anime review
October 17th 2009 04:33
I just feel weird for not writing this anime review last week since I haven't finished watching this anime (it has 145 episodes and it's way impossible for me to finish it in a short time). But then again, this anime is adapted from the manga by Yuusuke Murata.
Genres: comedy, drama, tournament
Themes: School, Sports
synopsis: Kobayakawa Sena is a little guy who always get picked on by the bullies in school. Since elementary school, he always play the role of the 'errand boy' to the extent that he has become swift and fast in his movements. Coincidentally, Hiruma Youichi and Kurita Ryukan are looking for a fast running back for their American Football team (Amefuto) and want to put Sena in the team. To hide their new 'star' player from the eyes of other High Schools, Hiruma encases Sena in a Amefuto helmet with a dark visor and name him Eyeshield #21.

After watching this anime for so long, I kinda lost my words for this anime. It's not that it's a boring anime, it's just that I find it hard for me to write about this anime these days. But then again, I'll do my best when it comes to writing the review for this anime.
I may have not told you this before but I really don't like sports so obviously I don't fancy watching sports anime. With Slam Dunk as a good introduction for me to watch sports anime and followed by Ookiku Furikabutte, I decided to give Eyeshield 21 a try but the long episodes can be a downside for me. But I still watch this anime until now because I really want to know how it ends.
Okay, enough with long introduction as I feel like gearing up for the main point. I have no idea whether the storyline really does follow the exact storyline like the one in manga but the probability is there. It's just that the some of the story can just be a minor thing so not included those extra stuff in the anime version is perfectly fine, at least for me. Feel free to correct me or share with the rest of us regarding the storyline of this anime.
Just like any other sports anime, especially if the sports happen to be not-so-well-known sport (I know American Football is big in US but definitely not in Asian countries), it has a tutorial in between so then we can learn about the rules. How this anime explains the rule is pretty straightforward and it also repeats the rules again so then we will remember the rules. This kind of approach is like refreshing our minds with those set of rules. Again, you don't need to know the rules beforehand if you want to enjoy this anime so you can still have fun watching this anime.
Other than the rules explanation, the storyline is also very easy to understand and the characters introduction is also nicely done as well. Obviously, there are always new characters introduced in every episodes but the introduction is not messy. Some anime do have messy characters introduction but this anime really does takes time to introduce characters slowly. I would say that the character that stands out the most besides Sena is Hiruma. I admit that he is a demon (not just physically) but he has a unique character. I bet he is the only character who always bring guns wherever he goes and has many kinds of firearms. Also, he's also the only character who is very good in manipulating people and school for his own goodness. I may have encounter this kind of character in other anime but I think it's a rare thing to see a character like him in sport anime.
As you can expect from the sport anime, this kind of anime is highly emphasize on working hard as a team to achieve similar goals, friendship, rivalry and the desire to win. But as far as I can say, those kind of elements I've mentioned were so heartwarming and touching in this anime. The phrase that I like the most from this anime is "We can still win as long as we don't think the probability is 0%". Okay, I may get the phrase wrong but the point is there. This anime really teaches us that we can still achieve our goal even if we have a slim chance of achieving it as long as we don't give up. This is a wonderful lesson for our lives.
This anime is a must watch regardless of the long episodes but honestly speaking, it doesn't feel like watching long anime if you keep on continue watching this anime. This anime really makes time goes by silently without us noticing it. If you're looking for something fun to watch, this anime is for you.
