Saiunkoku Monogatari (also known as Color Cloud Palace in English) is an anime adapted from a novel by Sai Yukino. The anime has 39 episodes altogether.
Genres: comedy, drama, romance, supernatural
Themes: bishounen, feminism, historical, male harem
Synopsis: Saiunkoku is a world of eight provinces or houses, each named after a different colour. The new Emperor, Shi Ryuuki, has gained for a reputation for being uninterested in courtly matters and for flaunting his love for men. Shuurei, although born of the important Kou family, has difficulty making ends meet. She easily accepts an invitation to be the Emperor's concubine in order to turn him into a good ruler. The mysterious Seiran, a young man who was adopted by her father, goes with her as Ryuuki's bodyguard. Entering the imperial palace revives Shuurei's dream of being a court official, and, together with the many companions she meets along the way, continues moving bravely forward while trying to fend off the Emperor's advances.

Honestly speaking, it's been a long time I haven't so hooked with the anime (probably because most of the anime that I'm currently watching are the on-going type) so this anime has the similar addiction like Skip Beat! Mind you that this anime is obviously different than Skip Beat! though.
Well, let's move on with the storyline first. At first, I thought Ryuuki (the emperor) is stupid for real and the reason why he was chosen to be an emperor is because there is no successor other than him. Another thing that I had in mind is that the whole 39 episodes will be specially devoted to make Ryuuki gets involved with the politics and make him a good emperor along with romance in between. That's exactly what I had in mind and boy I was wrong about that. The storyline really does focus on the things I've mentioned but apparently that's not just the only plot this anime has. This anime also has intense plot such as politics that occurred in Saiunkoku itself so the storyline doesn't just offer only romance. If this is the only thing you thought that this anime offers, watch this anime yourself and yes, I'm not kidding. There are some part that I find totally ridiculous such as letting a 12 year old boy becomes a governor because obviously there's no way a 12-year-old boy can govern a province. This is the only thing that I find ridiculous.
This might be just me but somehow, there are some points I find that it's absolutely very predictable. Maybe I've seen too many (not that many actually) shoujo anime that I find the storyline is so predictable. Speaking of the plot expansion, the plot can be very random but it's still managed to progress perfectly fine and it doesn't really confuse you. The only thing that I find confusing are the characters' name because it sounds exactly the same to me. And this anime sometimes makes me feel the presence of shonen-ai elements. It's not so obvious but the presence is there.
Overall, this anime is really interesting to watch because the drama is not like the typical shoujo anime. With a lot of variety in the storyline, this anime is a good watch. Another recommendation for those who don't like shoujo anime with fluffy storyline as this anime's anime storyline is not fluffy.
