The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi S2 anime review
July 18th 2009 07:51
The second season of the previous sequel of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi.
Genres: comedy, mystery, psychological, science fiction, slice of life, supernatural
Themes: otaku, school
Synopsis: On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having "no interest in ordinary humans". She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. When Kyon comments about Haruhi's joining every club in school and then quitting he unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves dragged, literally, into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short).

Not to be blunt or anything, I was actually quite surprise that this anime actually has a continuation despite of the fact that the storyline from the previous sequel doesn't give you a hint there'll be another sequel. Since I'm a curious person by nature, I decided to watch the anime even though I know what kind of anime is this in the past.
Surprisingly enough, this anime is actually following the sequence! If you have watched the previous sequel before, you will notice that the episodes were jumbled up and it doesn't even follow any sequence. Please don't tell me it's all because Haruhi wishes to be like that, lol. Well, if you have a traumatic experience (like me) with the previous sequel, the new sequel will do justice for you since the order of the episodes make sense. So, there is no problem with that.
You might be thinking that this anime doesn't have any interesting plot. The answer is yes and no. Yes because it does looks like one from the surface and no because the interesting part is nicely hidden. If you're wondering what is the interesting plot, feel free to read but I'm warning you because there's a spoiler ahead.
You may find it funny that how come a girl like Haruhi has a major influence on esper, alien and time traveler. Not just that, she's also has the control over things like time. Whatever things that occurred to them is all because Haruhi's wish. Obviously it doesn't make sense but this is the main highlight in the second season where whatever weird things happened to them is because of Haruhi and nobody else.
So, what do you think about this anime? On a second thought, the storyline for the second season is a lot more concrete and interesting than the first season because I still find that the storyline for the first season totally random. The storyline for the second season feels like a typical sci-fi movie so it's an amazing thing for this kind of anime to have that kind of storyline.
If you're asking me whether is it worth watching the second season of this anime, my answer would be it's okay if you chose not to watch unless you really are Suzumiya Haruhi's freak or something along that line. I would still watch but it's still won't be considered as my favorite anime.
